Wrestling season comes to a close
The Whitman Wrestling season came to an end on March 6th, at the individual state championships. The Vikes, one of the most dominant teams in the state, end their season as state semi-finalists that sent six wrestlers to the individual state championships.
At the meet, the team had a strong showing with a second place, two third place and a fourth place finish.
One Hundred Thirty pounder Michael Harder initially lost in the semi finals bout against Arundel’s Frank Goodwin but bounced back and won his other matches in en route to a third place finish.
Then, 145 pounder Andrew Follman lost in his opening match but then won four straight bouts to place fourth in his weight class.
One Hundred Eighty Nine pounder Taylor Leighton placed second in his weight class after losing a tough finals against Patrick Carey in a 5-3 bout. He was up with just seconds left and almost upset Carey, but ended up coming just short.
Lastly, 215 pounder Danny Lee got upset in the quarterfinal bout against Urbana’s Mike Daley 3-1 but came back to place third.
Although the Vikes are losing key seniors, they are determined to come back next season and continue their dominance of Montgomery County and try to break through the state semi-final barrier.
