Wilson High School becomes first DCPS to have lacrosse team
For most Montgomery County students, lacrosse is just as common as football or basketball, so it may come as a shock that Wilson High School just became the first D.C. public school ever to have a lacrosse team.
Mike Breslin, organizer of Break Out Lacrosse, a D.C.-based training company, was using Wilson as a practice ground for his middle and high school athletes, which brought Wilson students’ attention to the sport.
Wilson athletic director Mike Burnell recognized the potential and contacted Breslin about starting a team. He says that lacrosse is a large part of most D.C. area high schools, so he felt Wilson students would enjoy the opportunity to try something new. (continue reading…)
Boys tennis loses first match in three years
Boys tennis beat the Blair Blazers 6-1, April 28, and the BCC Barons 6-1, April 27, improving its record to 7-1.
After losing to the Wootton Patriots 7-0 Friday in their first regular season loss in over three years, these two wins were important in defining their outlook for the rest of the season.
“Every year we haven’t even considered losing,” number one singles Pablo Gottret says. “But this year we knew from the beginning that we were going to be the underdog in this match.”
Wootton, whose team is composed of four nationally ranked players, had the upper hand in every game. (continue reading…)
Boys tennis improves to 5-0, faces Wootton Friday
Boys tennis defeated the Rockville Rams 6-1, April 22, improving to a 5-0 record. Coach Jasen Gohn anticipated an easy win and put in many alternates to give them playing time and experience for the season.
The one loss of the day was from reserve Sam Talisman, who was filling in for number three singles player Aaron Hoffman. (continue reading…)
Boys tennis wins season opener
Boys varsity tennis had an easy opening match when they beat the Blake Bengals 8-0, Wed. March 24.
Number one singles Pablo Gottret won handily while number one doubles Adam Schefkind and Jacob Pine won 6-0, 6-4. Number three singles player Aaron Hoffman also won 6-0,6-0 and the Vikes did not lose a single match. (continue reading…)
Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in true Irish style

Leprechauns, shamrocks, pots of gold and lots of green. All of these come to mind when thinking of St. Patrick’s Day, a holiday often viewed as merely a “Hallmark Holiday.” However, while some view it as an excuse to celebrate, drink too much or pinch people unexpectedly, some Whitman students stay more true to the traditional Irish holiday.
Viking swim team wins county title
On Feb. 20, the Viking swim team won the Montgomery County Championship title in a close meet.
“It was a very interesting year for Whitman because it is so rare to have such a deep group of people who really can excel in all the different types of events,” senior Jenna Mahaffie says. “We have the capability to cover a lot of ground which enabled us to succeed.” (continue reading…)
Hurdler Entwistle advances to states
The indoor track team competed in the indoor regional finals, Feb 17. Among the many contenders, sophomore Madeleine Entwistle stood alone as the only Whitman runner to qualify for states.
Entwistle placed fifth out of 25 runners in the girls 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.33 seconds. The top eight qualify, so she had secured a spot after her race. (continue reading…)
