The baseball team’s win streak was halted at four when they lost to the cross-town rival BCC Barons 3-0, April 24.

The game was a pitching duel between Viking left hander Ross Olchyk(3-1) and right hander Nico Narel-Aguilar.

The first three innings of play were scoreless and Olchyk maintained a perfect game. However, in the top of the fourth, a costly Whitman error gave BCC a single. Then, BCC hit a rocket to the center field wall that just got over the fence and centerfielder James Dionne’s stretching arm, thus taking a 2-0 lead. BCC would add one more run in the top of the fifth inning to extend its lead to 3-0. (continue reading…)

Baseball continued its winning streak on April 22 with a 4-0 win over Northwest, moving its record to 7-3 on the season. The Vikes were led by sophomore pitcher Ryan McGill who in his first start threw an impressive four hit game.

Both teams started off slowly from the plate and could not drive in any runs throughout the first three innings. However, the Vikes got on the scoreboard with one run in the fourth and one run in the fifth inning to aid McGill. Additionally, they scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to finish off the game. McGill did not need any help since he kept the Jaguars scoreless throughout the contest. The baseball team defeated the Gaithersburg Trojans 4-3 April 20, improving their record to 6-3 on the season.

Pitcher Michael Flack was the highlight of the game by hurling a complete game, allowing only five hits and three earned runs. His recent success has made up for his faulty start at the beginning of the season.

Flack got just enough run support, most of which came early in the game. In the first inning Paul Balland battled for an eight pitch at bat before roping a double to the centerfield wall that brought in two runs. (continue reading…)

Varsity baseball upset cross-town rival Walter Johnson 5-4, bringing its record to 5-3 on the season.

WJ, 6-2, was heavily favored for the game after starting the season with six straight wins before falling to Wootton. The Vikes, on the other hand, came in with inconsistent pitching and hitting on the year.

Pitcher Ross Olchyk gave up four runs (three earned) in six and one-third innings pitched and the boys’ bats came alive to assist him.

The game started off poorly for the Vikes when right fielder Brett Morgenstern misplayed a single by WJ, allowing a run to score. Olchyk calmed down and got out of the inning with only a one run deficit. After a scoreless at bat for the Vikings, Olchyk retried all three batters in the second inning in succession and swayed the momentum in his team’s favor. (continue reading…)

Coming off the best season in school history, the baseball team looks to improve on last year’s regional final showing with an appearance at states.

Coach Joe Cassidy tells the team to aim for improving one game every year but says that due to the loss of key seniors, “getting back to the regional finals is more realistic.”

The boys lost several consistent hitters with Danny Williams, Ethan Thompson and Chris Kelly all graduated. Williams hit .328 and drove in fourteen runs, Thompson hit .475 and drove in seventeen while Kelly hit .360 and batted in twelve. The three accounted for 34% of the total RBIs from 2009.
