While many seniors view second semester as a time to relax and slack off, a select few have decided to expand their interests and try a new activity. This spring season, four senior boys have decided to join the volleyball team despite not having any previous playing experience.

“I’ve had no experience since gym, but I had nothing better to do since hockey ended,”  Zack Wolfe says.

Wolfe decided to attend the tryouts on a whim, and was soon playing an unknown sport. Along with fellow seniors Richard Scordato, Ameed Nsouli and Spiros Vonortas, trying to prove his worth on the court caught the attention of some of the other athletes. (continue reading…)

Mother Nature has disrupted the crew team’s season for the second time this year, as heavy flooding forced the 100- student club sport to practice on land in the week leading up to its first race. The team, which was late getting onto the water due to heavy snow, will not be able to practice on the water again until March 20, the day of the race.

Head coach Kirk Shipley moved quickly March 13, having  the varsity teams move all boats stored in the boathouse onto a trailer, Shipley then drove the trailer to Whitman. The main fear is that the flooding could reach as high as the lower bays of Thompson Boat Center, where the team keeps their boats. (continue reading…)

In mid-January, a Whitman student uploaded pictures of boys basketball players at a party with alcohol onto Facebook.  A teacher with a Facebook account saw the pictures and then forwarded them to Dr. Goodwin.  However, because there were no pictures of players actually consuming alcohol, Dr. Goodwin decided that the students did not break the school’s zero tolerance policy.  Because of this, Goodwin withheld the names of the basketball players from head coach Chris Lun, electing instead to speak with the team about the risks of underage drinking.
